Traditionally the trousseau (meaning 'small bundle') would be made up of everything a bride needed as she entered her new home - her clothing, linens and household items. Often these items would be handsewn by female members of the family over many years, stored in a wooden hope chest and were a sign of the family's wealth and social standing.
In the first decade of the 20th century, the trousseau, as I know as a female tradition in St. Michaels island in Azores, was mainly sew and embroidery work in sheets, pillowcases, towels, etc, representing the initials of the couple as a monogram.
